So the Post has

Is this still a thing people do? I saw it a lot after 9/11 (and hated it), but I can’t even remember the last time I’ve been on a flight where people did this... Do I need to be flying to the mid-west more or something? Is it a hokey thing that some airline I don’t fly encourages? Is the Post just 15 years behind on their trends?
Do you applaud when your plane touches down?

I think it’s corny but acceptably so
; it’s a genuine miracle that commercial air travel is as safe as it is, and celebrating that miracle upon every landing is OK with me.

Unless there’s an emergency onboard that the pilot needs to use his skills to pay the bills, no to clapping.
It’s like when people clap in a movie theatre.

I’ve never seen this in real life, but would be pretty annoyed if it was a routine flight or just a bit choppy.
Now if the pilot performed some crazy aerial maneuvers to get a severely malfunctioning aircraft landed safely, that would be another story.

ive been on one flight where clapping happened after landing
heavy crosswinds caught the plane just before touchdown
i think the clapping mostly happened to try and hide the fact that everyone just shat their pants and were more than a little bit surprised to have not landed upside down

I’ve witnessed this twice in my life after particularly bumpy flight when everything hit the ceiling and a very very crabby landing in Seattle.

I don't clap, but I'm not irked by everyone else's choice to clap.

Clap cheeks on planes.

I’ve only seen it a couple times and not in years. I fly about twice a month too.
I find it mildly irritating, but not overly so. I do feel very strongly about people that clap after a movie - those are bad people.

I was on a flight where we all clapped on takeoff. Of course it was leaving Diego Garcia so the celebration was called for.

It looks like a paradise from satellite photos, but I can imagine it being less appealing in person, and that even its charms might get old fast.

I was on a flight this summer that ended with an exceptionally hard landing. Everyone kind of let out a breathe when we hit and a kid around seven years old yelled out, “what the heeeeell was that?!”, which got everyone laughing. I approve of that type of response. We should have all boo’d.

It would be a paradise, for a few weeks. We were stationed there for a year. The isolation (pre-internet days ), lack of a civilian populace, boredom, and the terrible food turned it in to hell. The drinking on that island was epic.

Maybe it’s appreciation for a soft touchdown? I never see this.

An 8 hour Ryanair flight into Kiev.
I think they would have applauded if we had crashed to end our misery soo.

Clapping on a plane?
If I was a pilot I'd find that very patronising. Lol.

Some of it’s cultural. My wife has told me that it happens on pretty much every flight in Bulgaria. Though I believe she throws in something about drunk Russians as an excuse.

On my most recent flight, a guy was flying for the first time and started shaking and hyperventilating when we were descending. So a few people near him did a soft applause and patted him on the back and stuff when we landed, just to say he held it together well (even though he honestly didn't). That seemed fitting, but I agree that the whole plane clapping is dumb.

If the pilot performs an Ace maneuver in crap conditions, I’d clap. But for a normal landing, no need.
